Oregon History Comics 10: Oregon Bikes

Oregon Bikes explores the history of the bicycle through the story of Fred T. Merrill, a daredevil rider that introduced the “safety” bike to Oregon. Written by author Sarah Mirk and illustrated by local artist and bike advocate Shawn Granton, this comic highlights some of the social milestones that transformed Portland into one of the country’s friendliest biking cities.

Sarah Mirk is an Oregon-based writer and current online-editor for Bitch Media. Her work has also been featured in the weekly newspapers The Portland Mercury and Seattle’s The Stranger. Shawn Granton is a freelance artist and author of the minicomic Ten Foot Rule. He is the founder of the Urban Adventure League, a nonprofit aimed at exploring Portland’s urban environment.
